Joann is survived by her beloved children, Joseph Sayer of Naugatuck, CT and Leslie Brown of Stamford, CT; her adoring grandchildren, Kyle Brown, Todd Brown, Glen Brown, and Sean Sayer, and her loving cousin, Mary Hutchinson. She is preceded in death by her husband, Julian Sayer.
Born on August 2, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY, she was orphaned at a very young age. She was cared for by her grandfather Abram Heppner, her aunt Beatrice Heppner, her uncle Joe Heppner and his wife Jane Hutchinson. She married Julian in 1953 and moved to Stamford several years later. Joann worked as a legal secretary for over 30 years at GE Capital in Stamford. Joann was also a past PTO President at the Long Ridge School.
The most giving of all people, Joann will be remembered by every one whose life she touched. As her grandson Todd wrote in a poem, “My grandmother loved with all her heart. You could tell she was special right from the start. She showed it every day.” Regarding her affliction with Alzheimer’s disease, Todd captured the family’s feelings when he wrote, “I missed you before you were gone and you were gone long before I missed you.” Joann will be in our thoughts and hearts forever.
A family gathering is planned to celebrate Joann’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org. The family would like to thank Sunrise of Stamford and Vitas Healthcare for their uncompromised and loving care of Joann.
Arrangements under the direction of Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, Stamford, CT.
