He was a loyal and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and a devoted physician to his many patients.
He was born in Hartford, Connecticut on October 24, 1929 to the late Harold Edward and Anne Lowe Nagle of Stamford. He was predeceased by his sister Betty Nagle (Davis) Hardiman, his brother Msgr. William A. Nagle, his great-nephews SWO Navy Seal Brian R. Bill and Christian Barrett Bill. Also, brothers-in-law David Sullivan, Jr., Kenneth Madigan, and nephew, Michael Sullivan.
He graduated from Fordham University in 1951 and Thomas Jefferson Medical College in 1955. He interned at Greenwich Hospital, completed a residency in Radiology and Radio-isotopes at New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center and a residency in internal Medicine at Jefferson Medical College Hospital. From 1959 – 1961 he served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Medical Corps at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado. While in the Army, he received specialized clinical training and licensing for the use of radioisotopes and served as Chief of the Radioistopes Emergency Medical Team. In the event of an international radiological emergency, he reported directly to the U.S. Surgeon General.
John opened a private practice of Internal Medicine in 1961 in Stamford, CT. Retiring 38 years later. He had staff privileges at both St. Joseph Medical Center and Stamford Hospital. He was a senior attending physician at both hospitals and served as a clinical instructor of medicine at the New York Medical College. He was Director of the Division of Medicine at St. Joseph’s Medical Center from 1971 to 1999, Chief of the Medical Staff from 1984-1986, a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and elected a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.
He served as President of the Stamford Branch of the American Cancer Society, was a member of the Fairfield County and Connecticut Medical Society. Subsequent to his retirement in the fall of 1999, he was appointed an Honorary Member of the Staff at Stamford Hospital.
He enjoyed his weekly coffee group, skiing in the East and West – Summer was spent with family at his home on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Gaffney Nagle, his children: John Nagle, Jr. (Debbie); Jeffrey Nagle; Brian Nagle (Kathleen); Kathleen Nagle and Kerry Nagle.
Fifteen grandchildren; John III, Ryan, Gavin, Catherine, Jeffrey Jr., Brendan, Kiara, Fiona, Shayla, Flynn, Griffin, Riley, Cassidy, Matthew and Alexandra. One of his greatest desires was spending time with family. He delighted cheering on his children and grandchildren at swimming and other sporting events, encouraging their educational pursuits and inspiring strong family values.
He is survived by nieces and nephews: Patricia Parry (Michael MD); Anne Goebel (Jim); Sharon Davis; Rev. Thomas Davis (Joanne); Maureen Davis; Mary Sikes (John); Jeffrey Davis. Sister-in-law Lyn Sullivan, Barbara Madigan, nieces Kathleen Farrell, Maureen Rosati, Kathleen Greene, Eileen Madigan, nephew, David Sullivan III, and several great-nieces and nephews.

His family will receive friends on Thursday, August 11, 2022, from 4-7 p.m. at the Leo P Gallagher Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St Stamford, CT. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at the Church of St. Cecilia on Friday, August 12, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at St. John Cemetery in Darien.
