Born in The Bronx on July 23, 1944, he was the son of the late Marion and John Zeiss Sr. He grew up in Stamford with the Cove Boys and graduated from Wright Tech in 1962. He then enlisted in the US Navy where he served as the ship’s carpenter on the USS Algol (AKA-54). Afterward, John ran a successful business, Zeiss Construction, for 46 years.
Affectionately known as “YOLO,” John was a loving father and loyal friend whose greatest joy was spending time with loved ones. He enjoyed vacationing in Boca Raton, FL and made frequent trips to New York City to spend time with his friends at the Friars Club. He enjoyed golf, watching sports, and meatballs. More than anything, he cherished the lifelong memories he made with his friends, children, and grandchildren, and he lived for making people laugh.
An avid golfer, John was a longtime member of Westchester Hills Golf Club. His achievements include a club championship in 1979 and three holes in one. He loved sharing stories and offering putting advice on the golf course with his children and friends.
John will be remembered for his steadfast generosity, big heart, staunch loyalty, and unrelenting willingness to go out of his way to help others. He will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who knew him.
He is survived by his children Tammy McKinnon (Robert), John Zeiss III, Alex Zeiss (Stephanie), and Samantha Zeiss; siblings Alicia Boccuzzi (Ted), Peter Zeiss (Pat), Paul Zeiss (Kathy), and Sandy Zeiss; and grandchildren Christian, Kate, and Claire McKinnon. He was predeceased by his parents, Marion and John Zeiss Sr.
