

MARCELLUS GEORGE UHRICH of Stamford peacefully entered into eternal rest on October 18, 2010 at the age of 96. He was born in Buffalo New York on September 16th, 1914 of Edward (Eduard) Uhrich and Cecilia Anna Uhrich (Cook born Kuch). He was the beloved husband of Antoinette Schlueter Uhrich who survives him. They had been married for 72 years.
A long time resident of Stamford, he had a lifetime career in the baking industry. Known as Marcel, he began his career in Buffalo where he joined the Hall Baking Company. He rose in positions as a Supervisor at bakery of Star Baking in Cleveland, Plant Manager in the Mills Baking bakery in Detroit, and then at the general offices in Cleveland – all subsidiaries of Continental Baking Company. In 1956, he and his family moved to Stamford where he resided until his death. He worked in the Continental Baking general offices in Manhattan and then Rye New York where he rose to be Director of Bread Production, Quality Control, and Efficiency. He retired from Continental Baking in 1981. His career was marked by the development of a number of innovations in commercial baking production methods, new bread formulations, and new products such as “fork split” English muffins and knife split butter top bread.
Mr. Uhrich was Past President of Northern Ohio Bakery Production in Cleveland, Past President of Metropolitan Bakery Production Club in New York City, and an Executive Board member of the American Society of Bakery Engineers (now the American Society of Baking).
Marcel was educated in the parochial school system in Buffalo and attended the University of Buffalo. He graduated the American Institute of Baking in the Baking Science and Technology program, as a member of the class of 1941. He was a lifetime member of the AIB Alumni Association.
In Stamford, he was an active member of Saint Gabriel’s Church from it’s founding until his death. He enjoyed still and movie photography, with his camera capturing every family event and documenting his travels. In retirement, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels and remained involved in the baking industry.
Most of all, he cherished his family. He was a source of love, support and quiet wisdom.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Antoinette, their five children: Marie (Theresa) Uhrich of Norwalk, Mark Uhrich and wife Monique of Maisons-Laffitte France, Margaret Tatton and husband Geoff of Stamford, Mary Pobieglo and husband Joe of Essex Junction Vermont, and Ruth Ann Cloonan and husband John of Norwalk; four grandchildren: Laura Burbage and husband Christopher of Hampton Virginia, John Uhrich and wife Mary of Acton Mass, Christopher Tatton and wife Amy of Chelmsford Mass, Melissa Tatton of Stamford and fiancé Guy Levy of Trumbull, and step-grandson Mathieu Auriol of Paris France; and one great-grandchild: Derek Uhrich of Acton Mass. He was predeceased by 5 brothers.
Calling hours will take place on Tuesday 26 October from 4pm to 8pm at the Leo P Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Gabriel Church in Stamford on Wednesday 27 October at 11am followed by burial at the Queen of Peace cemetery in Stamford.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Extension Society (Chicago), or Saint Gabriel RC Parish of Stamford in the name of the Uhrich Family, or to another charity of preference.
