Marge is survived by her children, Thomas Meyer of Stamford, CT and Terry Meyer of Providence, RI; her three grandchildren, Preston, Kristin and Lauren; and her four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Meyer of Stamford, CT.
Marge’s life was full of adventure, passion and dedication to social change. Born on August 18, 1926 in New York, NY to Frances & Herman Sumergrade, Marge grew up in Kew Gardens, N.Y. with her sister Joan. An avid reader and fierce intellectual, Marge pursued her social work degree at Skidmore College and University of Wisconsin. She met her husband, Herbert, in 1947 and in pure feminist fashion, “suggested” that they marry. Marge and Herbert moved to Havana, Cuba where the couple lived for 5 years. Returning to New York in 1953, they settled in Mamaroneck, where her children, Tom & Terry were born and raised. In 1974, the family relocated to Stamford’s Dolphin Cove community where Marge lived prior to relocating to Edgehill in 2013.
A vivacious, charismatic and generous individual, Marge supported her community. As a young woman, she advocated for women’s rights as a board member of Planned Parenthood and a chairman at League of Women’s Voters in Westchester. Her passion for travel and experiencing cultures fueled her passion to others. In Stamford, Marge volunteered with Literacy Volunteers, Meals on Wheels, Ferguson Library and Reading Partners. She was honored by several charitable organizations, such as Save the Children, who she supported throughout her life.
Marge passed away suddenly but her grace, generosity and love for life will be remembered. Marge departs as a leading figure in the community, a beloved family member, and an inspiration to many.
The family will receive visitors and host a small ceremony between 3:30- 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 20 at Gallagher Funeral Home on Summer St. in Stamford. All who knew or loved Marge are welcome to attend and celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages gifts to Save the Children “In Honor of Margery Meyer”.
