MARY ELLEN TROY, daughter of the late Augustine (“Gus”) and Mary Ellen (“Marion) Leydon Troy, passed away peacefully holding her sisters’ hands on August 26, 2025. She was 70 years old. She was the second of 5 siblings born and raised in Stamford, CT. She graduated from Stamford Catholic High School class of 1972, and Bryant College class of 1976, where she was the president of her sorority. She was an accounting professional and spent most of her career working in the banking industry in Stamford, Manhattan and Long Island.
Mary Ellen was a fun-loving, talented, and joyful daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She was known for her culinary skills (but not the clean-up afterward), her very detailed handmade Christmas stockings for family and close friends, and her enthusiasm for any celebration! She was affectionately known as Mare, Mabel, and Mary Elegant.
Sadly, Mary Ellen was diagnosed with early onset mixed type dementia in 2014, after she lost the ability to speak fluently. She struggled to find the right words and manage her day-to-day life. In hindsight, we realize that her disability began at least 10 years prior to her diagnosis. We noticed subtle personality changes without the memory loss issues frequently associated with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Memory loss ultimately became an issue as the disease progressed. Nevertheless, people were drawn to her sweet, cheerful, engaging personality up until the end. Throughout it all, she never indulged in self-pity or complained about the unfairness of it all. Her motto was, “Cherish every day.”
She is survived by her siblings Brian Troy of FL, Loretta Troy Pirc and Ginger Troy, both of Orange, CT. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Christopher (Emily) Pirc, Brian (Sofia) Troy, Cameron (Blair) Pierce, Jenny (Matt) Troy Donan and Carolyn (Charlie) Pirc Mullins, as well as her grandnieces and grandnephews Brian, Mackenzie, Max, Landon, Emma, Bryson, Graham, Olivia and Grace. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Patrick Troy of NH, her brother-in-law Doug Pirc, and her sister-in-law Sarah Troy.
Calling hours for Mary Ellen will be held Tuesday, September 09, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford, CT 06905. There will be a funeral Mass Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 10:30 AM at The Church of St. Cecilia, 1184 Newfield Ave., Stamford, CT 06905. Graveside service will follow at St. John Cemetery, 25 Camp Ave., Darien, CT 06820.
