Mary Lutz, 89, of Stamford, and a former resident of New York City, and Highland Lakes, New Jersey, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2018. She was born in New York City on September 15, 1928, to the late Mary Younger Ryan and the late John Ryan. Mary grew up on West 47th Street, between 9th and 10th Avenue, and went to PS 51.
She met her late husband, Leonard Lutz, in 1947, in one of their neighborhood clubs, and they were married in 1949. Mary was embraced by her husband’s extended family of 10 brothers and sisters. Mary and Leonard settled in an apartment on West 47th Street, and their beloved daughter Linda was born in 1952, followed by their son, the late Charles Lutz, in 1955. Mary was very involved in her community, including the Mother’s Club at Holy Cross Church, as a Brownie leader, Ladies Club President and the Red Hatters. During her life Mary forged many life long friendships. Mary was an avid dancer and theatergoer, a passion she shared with her daughter Linda throughout her life. Mary and Leonard loved to travel, and over the years they shared many wonderful memories from their trips to Hawaii, England, Ireland and more.
Mary’s favorite memories included her wedding day, Leonard’s first day serving on the New York Fire Department, nights at the Copacabana in the Latin Quarter, visiting their Highland Lakes, New Jersey home, dancing with Leonard, and countless great times with close friends and family. Later in life Mary was thankful to have been connected with her family that remained in England and that connection brought her much joy. Through all of the great blessings of her life, Mary counted the birth of her grandson, Ryan Thomas Hogan, as the highlight of a wonderful life. Ryan brought much joy to Mary and Leonard.
Mary is survived by her loving daughter Linda Lutz Hogan, her husband Thomas Hogan, and their son Ryan Hogan, all of Stamford, Connecticut, and many loving nieces, nephews and brother in laws Thomas and Richard and their wives Carol and Joan. Her husband Leonard passed away in May 2018, and Mary was also pre-deceased by her son Charles.
To those fortunate enough to have known Mary, she was truly a kind, loving, and supportive family member and friend. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
