To generations of Stamford residents who passed through the public library system over the years, Naomi’s delightful demeanor and boundless love of literature were a constant presence. During her 43-year career, she led a popular “Story Hour” series for young children, many of whom would years later return with children of their own. She also served as president of the Ferguson Library union.
To those who knew her well, Naomi was an amazing individual whose kindness, compassion, selflessness and generosity were unparalleled, and beneficiaries ranged from her devoted family to colleagues, perfect strangers, and volunteer organizations like the Rehabilitation Center of Southwestern Connecticut, the Jewish Historical Society Library, and Hadassah, which presented her with the Distinguished Service Award.
Naomi was born in Ronkonkoma, New York, on October 8, 1929, the eldest of Seymour and Elizabeth Singer’s six children. At the age of sixteen, she attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she met her late husband, Robert Schreiber. They moved to Stamford in 1950, and while raising daughters Annea, Julie and Michelle, Naomi resumed her education, graduating from the University of Bridgeport in 1969 and earning a master’s of library science from Southern Connecticut State University.
In addition to her three children, sons-in-law and eight grandchildren, whom she doted on with a legendary zeal—routine sleepovers, craft projects and backyard soccer games—Naomi is survived by four siblings and many nieces, nephews and dear friends, who will forever remember her as their charismatic champion with a fondness for hot fudge sundaes and a willingness to travel to the ends of the world to help those who needed her.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home in Stamford, followed by a burial at Agudath Sholom Cemetery. The family will be sitting shiva on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 122 Palmers Hill Road, apartment 3316. Donations in Naomi’s honor can be made to the Friends of the Ferguson Library and the American Cancer Society. Condolences may be offered at www.leopgallagherstamford.com
