He was born December 14th, 1928 to Dr. Louis and Aida Sabbia. He was a resident of Stamford, CT as well as Block Island, RI. He attended Georgetown University and graduated in 1949. He went on to study medicine at the University of Milano and the University of Pavia graduating in 1956 with his MD Degree. He completed his internship at St Vincent's Hospital in New York in 1957 and conducted his residency at Brooklyn’s Veteran Hospital, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, New York Psychiatric Institute and the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies in Oak Ridge Texas.
His spent the remainder of his career as the Director of the Laboratory at White Plains Hospital. He was a physician by trade but also a true Renaissance man- a lover of music, art, science, literature, Greek mythology and poetry; as well as an accomplished sailor, painter and pilot. He belonged to many professional associations and in keeping with his renaissance nature and his proficiency as a classical painter, he was a member of the Art Students League in New York. Even in retirement, his inquisitive nature did not subside. He was always fascinated by the nature of the discipline he happened to be examining but also by those who had excelled and achieved greatness in their respective fields. He was a learned man, an erudite, but also a man with a sense of humor and an intuitive understanding of the world.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Berit Sabbia as well as his daughter, Kristina Sabbia, Michael Grant, his son, Richard F. Sabbia II, his daughter-in-law, Hilarie Sabbia, and his four grandchildren: Louis Mainella, Vincent Mainella, Ella Sabbia and Malena Sabbia.
Family and friends are invited to attend a service on March 25th, 2019 at 11:00 am at the St Francis Episcopal Church on 503 Old Long Ridge Rd, Stamford, CT.
