

Rosalie Berkowitz, a longtime resident of Stamford, died on Sunday July 27, 2014. She is survived by her daughter Lisa Lynn Munko of Naugatuck, her son Jeffrey Craig Berkowitz of Cos Cob, and her grandsons, Paul Munko and Brandon Berkowitz. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1979, Mrs. Berkowitz learned about and became involved in the Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Program for the handicapped, which dramatically changed her life. She became a lifelong supporter and fundraiser for the organization, receiving its 2004 Patt Bugg Award for Special Service and Dedication. Through her efforts, she was able to involve a number of celebrities in the Pegasus Program including Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman and Dick Button. Mrs. Berkowitz enjoyed showing her dogs at dog shows and in 1971 started a program for dog therapy at nursing homes and rehabilitation institutions in Stamford. She also lectured to youngsters at the Ferguson Library about the joy of raising pets. A graveside service at Temple Beth-El Cemetery on Roxbury Road is scheduled for 11:00 AM Tuesday July 29, 2014.
