Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the younger of two children of Louis Dorfman and Tillie Silver Dorfman and is survived by her older brother, Earl Dorfman.
As a teenager, Sandra met the love of her life, Joseph ("Joe") Barocas, who was then pursuing a graduate engineering degree in Philadelphia. They married in 1956 and shared 68 devoted years together before Joe’s passing. Soon after their marriage, Sandra and Joe began a family, and Sandra embraced her role as a homemaker—creating a home that was a true haven for those she loved.
Together, Sandra and Joe had four children: daughters Sabrina Benjamin (Daniel), Stacy Beyda (Daniel), Hayley Barocas Trock (Michael), and their son, Morris Barocas (Lisa). Sandra made countless memories with family and friends on their beautiful Egg Harbor yacht and at their summer home in Westbrook, Connecticut, where she especially cherished gatherings overlooking Long Island Sound. She valued family above all and took great joy in bringing people together, making her home a place where everyone—friends and family alike—could feel comfortable and welcome.
Sandra gave generously of her time to others, including delivering meals to the elderly over many years. She was active in Hadassah and a Board Member of Agudath Shalom Synagogue. Throughout her life, Sandra loved games and good company: bridge in her younger years, and later Canasta and Mahjong. With her family, Rummikub was her game of choice. Even during her battle with lung cancer, Sandra continued to host games at her apartment until virtually the end, exemplifying her strength, spirit, and unwavering commitment to the friendships she cherished.
She relished boating, dining, and travel, and she traveled the world—visiting Bali, Hawaii, South America, Europe, St. Barths, and many other beautiful destinations. Sandra delighted in the finer things in life and had a discerning eye; she would let you know if something was “the real McCoy” or not. She loved to cook, read, and shop, and took special pleasure in finding a good bargain.
Sandra is survived by her four children and six grandchildren—Lindsay Benjamin Rosen, David Benjamin, Jeffrey Eisenberg, Chelsea Eisenberg-Naden, Carly Barocas, and Joseph B. Barocas—as well as nine great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her tremendous pride and joy. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Barocas, and by her parents, Louis and Tillie Dorfman. Sandra was profoundly blessed that her children have always been there for one another—helping, loving, and supporting each other—as they carry forward her legacy of devotion to family and care for those in need.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial donations in Sandra’s honor to the Susan Wojcicki Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity based in Los Altos, California, in support of lung cancer early-detection research, and to the Israel Cancer Research Fund, 52 Vanderbilt Ave., #1410, New York, NY 10017.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
