Thomas Christopher Bittman, aged 71, died September 12, 2018 at Stamford Hospital. Tom is survived by Bonnie, his devoted wife of 43 years; a son Thomas and daughter-in-law Christina; two grandchildren, Michael and Eva; a brother Charles and sister-in-law Maureen; and several nieces and a nephew. Tom graduated with honors from the University of Connecticut where he later obtained his MBA. During his senior year, he was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma, the business honors fraternity. Tom was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He had a successful career with the prestigious U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO), initially in Washington, D.C. and later New York. In 1975, he was a key member of the GAO team reviewing FBI domestic intelligence activities, the first such external review of that agency. In the 1980s, Tom directed GAO’s New York reviews of the Federal Reserve and the Securities and Exchange Commission. He received numerous awards for his work including the U.S. Comptroller General’s Meritorious Service Award. Tom subsequently worked as the Town of Greenwich Risk Director, and later as Audit Director for the NYC Housing Authority. Tom was a communicant at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Stamford. At his request, there will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be held later at a date to be announced.
