Wilbur (Will) Burns was born on August 15, 1920 in Pelican Rapids, MN, son of Charles and Emma Rhynes Burns. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 28, 2012 at Stamford Hospital. He was married to Agnes Baumgartner in 1942. They had a loving marriage and created a wonderful family. Agnes passed away 6 months ago. He was also predeceased by his brother Donald of Anchorage, AK, his sisters Lillian Tutt of Mesa, Arizona and Ellen Ann Galyen of Fargo, North Dakota. Survivors include his 4 children and their spouses - Daniel and Heidi Burns, Judith and Robert D’Andrea, Christine and William Minihan and Mary Calabrese and Carl Monti. Wilbur had 10 grandchildren and was blessed with 13 great grandchildren whom he loved dearly.
Wilbur was one of the original members of St. Bridget Church in Stamford, and was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. He was a devout Catholic. Mr. Burns worked for Continental Baking Company (Producers of Hostess Cake and Wonder Bread) for 34 years and retired as Vice President of Production. Mr. Burns was a computer teacher/volunteer at St. Cecilia School, Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford and other Stamford parochial schools. He was well known for his quick wit, love of children, generosity, and could always be counted on to perform an impromptu magic show whenever and wherever children were present. Children gravitated to him and he responded with joy. He was a man of exceptional kindness, accepting and not judgmental. He was curious, constantly reading and learning. He was a man of strong opinions, never hesitating to share them. Will remained involved in the community by continuing his volunteer work and exercising regularly at the Tully Center. He loved his family dearly and never held back in showing his affection. He was known as “Pop” to his family - we will miss him greatly. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the health care professionals at Stamford Hospital for their respect, excellent care and compassion towards Wilbur and his family. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 4th at 11:00 at St. Bridget of Ireland Church, 278 Strawberry Hill Avenue, Stamford, CT. Interment will be private.
