He was born in 1958 in Quanzhou, China, the youngest brother to five older sisters. His youth was shaped by the prevailing conditions of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. Xiaorong immigrated to Stamford in March 1990 with his wife and firstborn in search of a better life. He was undoubtedly successful in this pursuit, not only for himself but also for his family and neighbors. His community will be quick to tell you of the rich memories, neighborly warmth, delicious cooking, and flourishing garden he cultivated.
Xiaorong arrived in the US speaking no English and carrying $36 in his pocket. Over the next 36 years, together with Jingyan, he achieved the quintessential American dream. He raised three daughters and sent each to college. He purchased a home. Finally, he retired to his garden and to his daily walks at Cove Beach after his 30+ years of dedicated service to ShopRite supermarkets, where he worked. He enjoyed his retirement drinking tea, gardening, and doting on his grandchildren. His loud and boisterous disposition belied a profound kindness and generosity to all.
Xiaorong is survived by his wife, Jingyan Huang, his daughters: Zongqi and husband Kevin, Angela, and Susan and husband Lucas, as well as by his beloved grandchildren: Lucielle and Lark Zhou Forslund.
His garden continues to be the envy of the neighborhood.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday October 27th from 4pm to 8pm at Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home at 2900 Summer St. in Stamford, with a short service beginning at 6:30pm. The final viewing and burial will take place on Wednesday October 28th at 9:30am.
