In accordance with Nancy’s wishes, there will be no services.
Born on January 18, 1943, in Adams Center, NY, Nancy was the daughter of Carl and Agnes (Eaton) Scofield. After graduating high school, she managed and operated dairy farms in the Lorraine area for many years. During this time, she became affectionately known as “Ruthie” to many of the local Lorraine children. Nancy often recalled, with a warm smile, how much she loved seeing “wall to wall” kids filling her home. Her love for children and animals was evident in everything she did.
After retiring from farming, Nancy began working at Green Thumb in Brownville, NY, where she spent several years mowing and maintaining the office grounds alongside her brother, Jim. She cherished this time spent working together. Upon her full retirement in 2016, Nancy moved to North Carolina to be closer to her family.
Her favorite thing about moving south was mowing lawn on winter days-a rare treat from living winters in Lorraine, NY all her life. Most days, she found joy on the sun porch, soaking up the North Carolina sunshine while doing Word Search puzzles, birdwatching at the feeders, feeding cookies to the squirrels, watching the deer who visited, and sneaking toast and treats to the family’s beloved “grandpups.”
Nancy married Dexter R. Pitkin; although their marriage ended in divorce, they remained friends until his passing in 1996. Later, she met her companion Andy Bates, and together they operated a farm until his death in 1981.
Nancy is survived by her daughters, Dodie (and her “favorite son-in-law,” Larry) Mitchell and Tammy Pitkin, both of Stanley, NC; and Vicki (LaRock) Kellogg of Adams, NY, whom Nancy cherished as one of her own. She is also survived by her siblings: William (Nancy) Scofield, James (Cathy) Scofield, all of Adams, Edward (Dorothy) Scofield, David (Debra) Scofield, Jeffrey Scofield, all of Adams Center, Anna Lennox, Marion, NY, Peggy Robarge, Lorraine, She is remembered with love by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; two sisters and four brother-in-laws, Florence (Marvin) Waite and Coralyn (Corky) (Walter) Soules, Keith Robarge, and Donald Lennox; and a nephew, Jason Scofield.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org) or Tri-County Animal Rescue, 3326 Al Hager Lane, Iron Station, NC 28080.
