Stephen Patrick Dempsey, 79, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2025, at Aldersgate in Charlotte, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Richmond, California, Stephen attended Saint Mary’s College of California and went on to live a life marked by hard work, curiosity, and a deep love for both people and animals.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was fortunate to serve in Korea as a dog handler. That experience led to his first job with Sentry Dogs, where he continued training dogs and sharing his gift for understanding them. He later built a long and respected career as a chemist in the asphalt industry. During his years with Chevron, Stephen earned patents for his work and was admired for his creativity and dedication. He completed his professional journey with Paramount Petroleum, leaving behind a legacy of quiet achievement and integrity.
Stephen had many passions, but his happiest moments were often outdoors. He was a professional archer in his youth and later shared that love by teaching archery to young scouts in the Boy Scouts of America. He was at his best around a campfire, telling stories, both new and familiar, to anyone who would listen. His humor, warmth, and storytelling made him unforgettable to everyone who knew him.
A true animal lover, Stephen never met a dog he did not adore. He often said he wished he had become a veterinarian, and his compassion for animals reflected the same kindness he showed to people throughout his life.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, Nina Van Pelt Dempsey and Arthur "Jack" Francis Dempsey, and his brother David Dempsey.
He is survived by his loving wife, Geri Dempsey; his brothers Jerome Dempsey and twin brother Nick Dempsey; his sons and their spouses, Matt and Rachael Dempsey, and Jeff and Katie Dempsey; and his grandchildren William, Jack, Lauren, and Luke Dempsey. His family will forever remember his laughter, his stories, and the quiet strength he brought to every moment.
The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Hospice North Carolina, Hospice House North Carolina, Gina Porritt, Roy and Joyce Ludwig, Doug Burns, Paul Mesiti, LaRinda Saylor and Richard Saylor, Dr. Zhu and the Levine Cancer Institute, his hospice nurse Katheryn, and all of their dear friends in the Imagery community for their compassion, kindness, and care. A special acknowledgment is also given to his faithful dog Winnie, who never left his side and brought him constant comfort and joy.
There will be no visitation or service at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Stephen by making a donation to your local food pantry or to Nourish Up in Charlotte, North Carolina.
