He was born on June 18, 1943 in Charlotte, NC to the late Bill Lovingood and Vivian Thomas Lovingood.
Richard attended Gaston College and went on to build a successful career in Construction Engineering with Duke Energy, where he dedicated 38 years of service before retiring. Throughout his career, he formed lasting friendships and accumulated a wealth of stories from his experiences.
He was an active member of Second Baptist Church, serving as both a deacon and chairman. Richard also taught Sunday School and contributed to the church through various renovation projects, including assisting with the construction of the new building in December 1999.
Outside of work and church, Richard had a passion for the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, and golfing. He was also an enthusiastic coach in Little League Baseball, where his teams enjoyed many victories. Above all, Richard cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren. He had a love for travel, particularly to New England, San Antonio, and on a memorable journey aboard the American Orient Express through the National Parks of the West. Richard and his family also enjoyed an Alaskan cruise and trips to Disney World.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in passing by his sister, Linda Beatty and brother, Robert “Butch” Lovingood.
He is survived by his wife of 60 ½ years, Peggy Lovingood; daughter, Gerri Stines and husband Rodney; son, Richard Lovingood, Jr. and wife Martha; grandchildren, Carlee Devine, Lanie Devine, Nicholas Stines, McKinley Drumm, Brett Lovingood, Aaron Lovingood and wife Katie, and Chris Lovingood; great grandchildren, McKayden Drumm, Mason Lovingood, Lee Lovingood, Dawson Lovingood, Nora Lovingood, and Joel Lovingood; brother, Tommy Lovingood and wife Dianne; sisters-in-law , Jane Lovingood and Rachel Pigg and husband Wayne; special niece, Tracy Harkey; and many other loved family members.
A visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at Ranlo Baptist Church with the Celebration of Life Service beginning at 2:00 pm. The committal service will follow at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mt. Holly.
