

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Longtime Staten Islander Alfred A. Squassoni, 90, a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather and a retired city Fire Department deputy chief, died yesterday at his Tottenville home.
Born in Manhattan, he grew up in South Beach and graduated from New Dorp High School. Mr. Squassoni moved to Dongan Hills in 1957 and lived there until 1995, when he settled in Tottenville.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1942 to 1945, and attained the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Squassoni had a 34-year career with the city Fire Department, working in Manhattan. He retired in 1977 as a deputy chief in the 1st Division.
He was a member of the Staten Island FDNY Retirees.
Mr. Squassoni enjoyed hunting, fishing, tennis, ballroom dancing and listening to Italian music. He was an avid traveler and especially enjoyed RVing across the country.
His wife of 58 years, the former Florence Ronning, died in 2005.
Surviving are his daughters, Joan Williams, Linda Stec and Laura Squassoni; his son, Alfred; four grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
The funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills. Arrangements include cremation.
