Anthony was born in Manhattan, New York and later made his home in Great Kills, Staten Island where he lived with his beloved wife, Linda Lenning-Economou, and together they shared 58 years of marriage, building a life centered on love, devotion, and family.
He was the proud father of daughter, Jennifer Economou-Barreto and son in law, Mark Barreto, cherished grandfather of grandson, Dr. Matthew Barreto and wife, Christine (Russo) and granddaughter, Miss Katelin Barreto and boyfriend, Nicholas Schaffer. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Kevin Lenning, his nephews, Andrew Lenning (Allison) and Benjamin Lenning (Christy) and his great-niece and great-nephew, Emily and Benjamin.
A member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Anthony lived his life guided by kindness, compassion, and service to others. He dedicated his career to helping and protecting his community, serving as an NYPD Lieutenant for 25 years. Anthony maintained close friendships with his fellow NYPD officers, regularly gathering with them for breakfast and Christmas dinners. He deeply valued their companionship and cherished the camaraderie, support, and lasting bonds they shared over the years.
Following his retirement from law enforcement, Anthony continued his commitment to serving others as a substitute teacher, and a counselor at the Society for Seamen's Children. Anthony ended his career as the Director of Security at Project Hospitality.
Anthony was a lifelong learner who cherished education, earning bachelor’s degrees from John Jay College and Empire State College. Outside of his professional accomplishments, Anthony found great happiness in having family dinners, going on Disney Cruises and vacations to Florida, Aruba and St. Thomas, as well as frequent trips to Maine and a memorable vacation traveling across country to California. He loved reading, gardening, playing chess, and listening to jazz music. He especially loved his loyal Siberian Husky, Alfie Red Foxx, who will be waiting to greet him in heaven.
Although Anthony achieved much throughout his lifetime, he often said that his greatest accomplishment was his family and the love he shared with them. He was best known for his effervescent smile that could light up a room, his unwavering kindness, and the grace with which he treated everyone he encountered. A true gentleman in every sense of the word, Anthony has left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
His legacy of love, compassion, integrity, and devotion to family will continue to live in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization whose mission of honoring first responders and serving those in need reflected the values he held throughout his life.
