
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Anthony Italiano, 88, of Oakwood, a retired telecommunications technician, died Tuesday in Sea View Hospital and Rehabilitation Center and Home, where he had been a resident for the past three weeks.
Born in Jamestown, N.Y., he was raised in Mount Vernon and moved to Oakwood in 1963.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Italiano was wounded while serving in the Pacific Theater.
After graduating from the Collegian Business Institute, Manhattan, Mr. Italiano worked for Western Union in Manhattan as a telecommunications technician. He retired in 1980 after 35 years.
Mr. Italiano was a past vice president of the Teamsters Union and had been affiliated with the organization for 25 years.
He managed Little League teams when his sons were young. He also enjoyed playing softball and was a parishioner of St. Charles R.C. Church, Oakwood.
"He will forever be in our minds and hearts," said his daughter, Marie Italiano Bohl.
In addition to his daughter, Marie, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Gloria Cicero; two sons, Anthony Jr. and John, and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 9 a.m. in St. Charles Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
