Helped restore the crown on the Statue of Liberty
Anthony Verderame was born in Manhattan, N.Y., on July 8, 1914. He owned his own contracting company, and worked to restore the crown of the Statue of Liberty. At 70 years of age, he built a home for his daughters with his own hands. He also enjoyed restoring old homes. His hobbies included painting, playing cards, collecting antiques, gardening (planting tomatoes and cucuzza longa) and watching his beloved Yankees.
After retiring at the young age of 92, he spent his days doting over his great-grandchildren and taking trips to Atlantic City.
Anthony passed away Saturday evening, Feb. 17, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Marie; his children, Mary Jane, Barbara, and Little Barbara, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Rosemary, in 2003.
Viewing will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 20, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills. There will be a Mass on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Ann's Church, also in Dongan Hills. Interment will follow in Moravian Cemetery.
