Barbara Jean Nola (nee Sterling), age 87, of New Bern, NC, and Staten Island, NY. Barbara was born on March 20th, 1934, in Staten Island. She was an excellent student and gifted in math, scoring at the top of all NY State High School students her senior year while at Curtis High School. Though she qualified for continued education, she stayed in Staten Island and married the love of her life, James (Jim) Vincent Nola and started a family. Barbara was a devoted mother, continually running her boys to sports practices and religious instruction, all while allowing time for her husband to study and rise through the ranks as an officer in the FDNY. Once her boys were grown, Barbara worked at the South Beach Psych Center and Arthur Kill Correctional Facility until she and Jim retired and moved to the Fairfield Harbor Golf Community in New Bern, North Carolina, where they enjoyed more than thirty happy years. Throughout her life, Barbara knew the importance of keeping her mind sharp. She was a champ at card games and the New York Times crossword puzzle was no challenge for her. She also excelled at Mahjong and competed in tournaments in Las Vegas, winning quite a few. Barbara is pre-deceased by her mother, Mary Sterling (nee Best), her father John Sterling, and brother, William (Bill) Sterling. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Jim, and three sons-Jimmy and his wife Maria, Bob and his wife Charlene, and Dave and his wife Karen, as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Viewing will be on Friday, September 10th, 4-8pm at Harmon Funeral Home in Staten Island. Barbara will be greatly missed and may her memory be eternal.
