Bonice Amelie Hunt, 79, of Staten Island, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 23, 2024, at exactly 12 noon. A moment of symbolic stillness and transition, it reflects the balance and grace with which she lived her life—a life devoted to faith, family, and service.
On March 25, 1945, Bonice was born on the island of St. Martin, F.W.I to Geramyn Hyman and Alexander Hunt. Bonice spent her early years in the vibrant community of French Quarter. She helped her mother tend to sheep and other animals, a vital source of their family’s livelihood. Her nurturing spirit and work ethic were evident even then, traits that would define her life. A lover of music, Bonice sang in the choir and filled her days with song, a reflection of her joyful soul and deep connection to her roots. She was also an animal lover, always surrounded by her beloved dogs, who brought her great comfort and companionship.
Bonice later moved to New York, but her dedication to family brought her back to St. Martin when her mother needed care. After her mother’s passing in 1999, she returned to the United States, where she lived for 25 years with her sister, Atliene Mohamed, and her two nieces, Amina Williams and Khadija Mohamed.
Her life’s greatest work was as a caregiver, a role she embraced with unparalleled devotion. Bonice cared for her sister Atliene, who battled Alzheimer’s for many years, ensuring that she never had to enter a nursing home. Her selflessness and strength were a testament to her unwavering love and commitment. When Atliene passed in 2021, it was as though a piece of Bonice went with her, as their bond was truly extraordinary.
A devout Catholic, Bonice’s faith was her guiding light. She was also deeply respectful of other religions, embracing all expressions of spirituality with an open heart. She was a member of Life Study Fellowship since her early 20s, and her belief in the divine carried her through life’s challenges with grace and hope.
Bonice found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She was a fierce and competitive dominoes and gin rummy player, often taking on her nieces and family members during holidays. Her singing voice was a constant presence in her home, filling it with warmth and happiness. Her love for music was her celebration of life, and her songs remain a cherished memory for all who knew her.
Bonice is survived by her devoted nieces, Amina Williams and Khadija Mohamed, who carry forward her legacy of love, faith, and resilience. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those she touched throughout her remarkable life.
A memorial service to honor Bonice’s life will be held on Friday, December 27, 2024, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Casey Funeral Home in Staten Island.
Bonice Amelie Hunt lived a life of quiet heroism, unwavering devotion, and boundless compassion. May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with her sister, embraced by the divine, and serenaded by the angels she so loved to sing about.
