Jolanthe was born February 8, 1965 on Staten Island to Galt and Marlene MacDermot. Jolanthe was the first to be born followed by her identical twin, Sarah. From the start Jolanthe shared an inseparable existence with her twin sister.
Jolanthe attended St Peter’s girls’ school in St George. Jolanthe was an equestrian during her young adulthood sharing a horse called “Shadow” with Sarah. Jolanthe attended Carlton University in Canada for three years returning home to graduate from Wagner College with a degree in Spanish. Jolanthe worked for a Chinese/American Trading company located at the World Trade center. She was there during the 1993 bombing which prompted her to leave her job there. Jolanthe traveled extensively through Europe studying art. She lived in Spain and Ireland at various times.
Jolanthe MacDermot was a quiet, loving, considerate person. She had a warmth and caring for everyone that was accompanied by a great propensity to organize everything around her. She loved her family, her brother and sisters, her nieces and nephews. She was deeply religious. Jolanthe was a caregiver to her father, Galt MacDermot who passed away in 2018. She was a companion to her mother, Marlene who both shared a fondness for Opera and would set aside time to watch each day. Jolanthe had a core of inner strength, which was exhibited during her long battle with stage four breast cancer discovered several years ago. Despite her personal battle, Jolanthe’s favorite thing to do was host a gala Christmas celebration. Sometimes decorating would begin before Halloween.
She is a beloved sister, aunt, and daughter and will be missed terribly by her family and those that know her. She cared for her nieces and nephews. She cared for the elderly. She had a beautiful heart.
Jolanthe and Sarah did everything together and the family referred to them as ‘the twins’. They were very different in personality but very similar in their faith and their lives were grounded and revolved around caring for others. They cared for the individuals in their community. They were generous and kind.
Jolanthe, more so than cancer, could not survive without Sarah and passed away November 8th.
