

WWII soldier at Battle of the Bulge and popular figure in his New Brighton neighborhood, 'loved Sunday dinners with his family'
Carl A. Marretta, 94, much loved father, grandfather and great- grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully on Dec. 26, 2018.
Born on Jan. 21, 1924 and raised in Staten Island, Carl moved to New Brighton, Staten Island, N.Y., and resided there with his wife Theresa (Lomossaro) for 61 years before she passed away in 2009. He worked for the Marine & Aviation before retiring in 1987.
Carl served in World War II, the Battle of the Bulge, received a Purple Heart for his wounds received in action. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
He was active in Staten Island Boys Football League, Snug Harbor Little League and various veterans' associations. He enjoyed playing pinochle at the Cassidy Coles Senior Center. He was an active member of St. Paul's parish. He was known as the mayor of Lafayette Avenue in New Brighton and the best meatball maker. He and his family enjoyed large Sunday dinners together, but most of all enjoyed the special times spent with his children and grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Bessie (Gennaro), and his siblings, Joseph, Salvatore, Samuel, Louis, Pauline, Millie and Connie.
He has left behind many who will cherish his memory: his children, Carl (Anne Joergens), Patricia (Marino), Carol (Teddy Marcinak); his grandchildren, Christine Marino, David Marino (Rene Hannafin), Alyssa and Teddy Marcinak; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and James Agboton, Kayla and Thomas Hannafin; siblings, Rosemarie Karpeles, John Marretta, Robert Shay, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visiting at the Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Avenue, S.I., N.Y. 10310 is on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass is on Monday at Sacred Heart RC Church at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Wounded Warrior Project would be greatly appreciated by his family.
