Worked at family business, Iacono Food Market, Park Slope
Carmela (Millie) D'Iorio (nee Iacono), a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 18th.
She was a longtime Todt Hill resident, but had been residing at Carmel Richmond Nursing Home since August. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday.
Carmela was born on December 19, 1930 in Brooklyn to Gennaro and Adeline Iacono. She graduated f rom Sarah J. Hale High School and worked in the Garment Industry for several years before her marriage. In later years, Millie worked alongside her brother Ralph, carrying on the family business at Iacono Food Market in Park Slope. They were a dynamic duo for almost 40 years.
Millie was an excellent cook and thoroughly enjoyed hosting holidays and celebrations. Aunt Millie's potato salad and zeppoles were always eagerly anticipated at family gatherings.
Upon her retirement in 1993, Millie volunteered her time and talents to several organizations. Her sewing expertise was utilized for many projects crafted with the Eger's Nursing Home Holiday Fair group. She lovingly sewed baby buntings and crocheted matching blankets to donate annually to benefit unwed Mothers. As a member of the Staten Island Yarnettes, a crocheting group formed with several of her friends, they donated blankets to many organizations. She also walked the visually impaired weekly at the SI Mall.
Millie was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence D'Iorio and her four brothers, Pat, Larry, Mike and Ralph. She is survived by her children, Catherine Ripo (Victor), Del D'Iorio, and Sal D'Iorio, two granddaughters, Christina Gildea (Sean) and Marisa Ripo and her great grandson, Carter Gildea.
Carmela's family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the Visiting Nurse Service Hospice Program for all their care and support.
Due to the current Covid crisis, private services were held at Casey Funeral Home. A Memorial Mass will take place when it is saf e to do so.
