
Born in the Bronx, he moved to Staten Island in the late-1970s.
Mr. Newell graduated from the former St. Michael’s High School in 1962 and then joined the U.S. Marines, serving from 1963 to 1966 in Okinawa, Japan, and Guantanamo Bay.
He was proud of his military service and for the rest of his life, he was fond of saying, “Once a Marine, always a Marine,” and displayed a bumper sticker on his car that read, “American by birth, Marine by choice.”
Upon returning home, Mr. Newell took a job at C.D. Mallory and Company, and later worked at Glander International as a marine fuel oil broker.
In December of 1998, he began working at Oil Trader, Buuker’s LLC, where he was employed until his death.
In his leisure time, Mr. Newell loved rooting for the Yankees, the Jets and Notre Dame football. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Surviving are two sons, Kevin J. and Brian W.; two daughters, Kim Richard and Elizabeth Newell; seven grandchildren, and his longtime companion, Jeanne A. Kostiuk.
The funeral will be Friday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a service at 9:30 a.m. in St. Nicholas Chapel, Sunnyside. Burial will take place Monday in Calverton (L.I.) National Cemetery.
