STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Longtime Eltingville resident Clinton G. Abrams, 90, a retired insurance manager who was devoted to his family, died Wednesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Mr. Abrams was born in Oak Hill, N.Y., and was raised in Schenectady, Fullers and Catskill, N.Y.
In Catskill, he graduated from Catskill High School, where he played the French horn in the band. He was active in the Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Life, the second highest in scouting, and was a member of the Catskill Masonic Lodge.
He moved to Prince's Bay in 1954, and settled in Eltingville in 1955.
A World War II veteran, he first served in the New York Guard, and, in 1943, enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed aboard the USS General W. A. Mann, a troop transport, in the Atlantic Theater, and later was stationed aboard the USS Alcor, a destroyer tender, in the Pacific Theater. He was discharged in 1946.
After leaving the service, he returned to the Albany area and worked at G.E & Westinghouse Electric, then moved to Brooklyn and worked at National Bureau Insurance, where he met his future wife, Wilma A. Stark.
Before retiring in 1992, he worked at Travelers Insurance Company in Manhattan as a commercial lines district manager.
He earned a bachelor's degree in business from Wagner College, Grymes Hill, and was a member of the alumni committee. He also belonged to Eltingville Lutheran Church, where he was head of the church council and involved in Boy Scouts.
Mr. Abrams enjoyed reading, camping, fishing, baseball and skiing. He was a member the Telemark Ski Club in Brooklyn and was interested in genealogy, history, and Civil War battle sites.
In addition, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
A dedicated family man, he was kind, compassionate and always availed himself to his loved ones' needs. He also had a great sense of humor and will be deeply missed, family said.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jimmy R. O'Keefe.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Wilma; his sons, Gary and Kurt; his daughter, Gayle O'Keefe; his brother, Paul, and four grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Friday at 8 p.m. in the Casey McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Guilderland, N.Y.
