Daniel J Altilio Sr.

Passed away on March 7, 2012

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Daniel J. Altilio Sr., 85, of Tinton Falls, N.J., a former Staten Island resident and a retired FDNY captain, died yesterday at the Seabrook Village, Tinton Falls, N.J.

Born in Manhattan, he was brought to Brooklyn as a child. He moved to Great Kills in 1964 and to Tinton Falls in 2005.

Mr. Altilio worked for 23 years with the New York City Fire Department. He retired in 1974 as a captain assigned to Engine Co. 152 in Rosebank.

Mr. Altilio then became a registered nurse who worked with AIDS patients at several area hospitals, including the former Richmond Memorial Hospital, Prince’s Bay; Alexian Brothers Hospital, Elizabeth, and St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, Manhattan. He retired in the early 1990s.

Mr. Altilio served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He graduated from the former St. Michael’s High School, Brooklyn, and received his degree in nursing from the Hunter School of Nursing, Manhattan.

He was a parishioner of St. Clare’s R.C. Church, Great Kills, where he was a Eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society.

“He devoted his life to service and his God,” said his daughter, Angela Lewent.

Mr. Altilio also enjoyed doing stand-up comedy, often entertaining the other seniors at the retirement community where he lived.

In addition to his daughter, Angela, surviving are his wife of 67 years, the former Patricia Donnalley; four sons, Daniel Jr., David, Michael and Stephen; another daughter, Valerie Parisi; one brother, Joseph; one sister, Margaret Corbo; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Saturday from the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, with a mass at 12:15 p.m. in St. Clare’s Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
