my heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy s go out to you and your family ==  !!! ------- she would have been celebrating her 100th birthday --------- she is my mother-in-law ------I have so many wonderful memories of her -- always laughing and smiling -- and loved to dance -- loved to show off her legs ( lol) --- loved a nice glass of wine after dinner -- was a great cook ---- always happy ------ I don't ever remember having a bad word to say about anybody --- she loved life -- and loved her daughter - Flora - Daniel and David -- and all the grandchildren ----- lived life to the fullest !!! ----------- Gone but not forgotten --- safe in the arms of Jesus -- Rest In Peace -- Dottie !!!

My mother was born in Newark, New Jersey, but spent most of her 99 years on Staten Island. 
A creative person, she read to me during my early childhood, stirring my imagination. She was also a talented artist, who enjoyed painting portraits, still life and landscapes. Her home was decorated with her work and now it shall  grace mine.
For much of her working life, she was a switchboard operator, who worked in Downtown Manhattan's brokerages and real-estate offices. Later, she sold real-estate on Staten Island.
As a member of World War II's "Greatest Generation," she did what she could to help the war effort, such as operate the switchboard at Staten Island's old Halloran Hospital for wounded service members. She connected these heroes with loved ones back home.
My mother also recalls tunnels between the buildings at Halloran that she dreaded walking through; the clicking of her heels echoing throughout the length of the tunnel.
My mother loved the holidays and each year she prepared a scrumptious Thanksgiving turkey with stuffing.  For Christmas, she utilized her artistic talent to beautifully decorate real Christmas trees. 
As a child, I would lie beneath them and look up through the sparkling branches, while smelling their pine perfume. 
Mom also had a great sense of humor and we spent many hours laughing together.
I will miss all these things and so much more, but I'm confident we shall meet again within Heaven's gates.
