Douglas W. Matthius, 65 Staten Island native, senior financial executive, loved time spent with family Douglas W. Matthius, 65, formerly of Sea Bright, N.J., and most recently of Myrtle Beach, S.C., passed away unexpectedly June 28, 2016. Mr. Matthius began his career with Refco Partners, and held executive level positions with UBS Securities, Prudential Securities, Advest, and from 2006 to 2013, as senior vice president fixed income trading with Southwest Securities. He held an M.B.A. and a B.S. in Business Administration from Wagner College. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Alpha fraternity. A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Mr. Matthius was active in his youth at Immanuel Union Church as a member of the basketball league, youth groups and scouts. He achieved the prestigious God and Country, and Eagle Scout awards. An avid sports fan and all-around athlete, Mr. Matthius was a devoted New York Yankees and Giants fan, and dedicated to Wagner College athletics, his beloved alma mater. His real passion emerged as golf. As a member of Beacon Hill Country Club, he enjoyed both the sport and, utmost, the camaraderie that came with playing with close friends. Always the perfectionist, he strived to continually better himself, in both the game and in life, and with those who surrounded him. A curious mind, he enjoyed travel to faraway places like Europe, Hawaii, and the Mid-East; was an avid reader; and a connoisseur of fine wines and art, amassing a significant collection in his lifetime. But most of all, he enjoyed caring for and spending summers with his family at his seaside home, holiday get-togethers, and simply spending time with each one throughout the year. He deeply loved his mother, Barbara D. Matthius, and five siblings, sisters, Barbara-Ann "Bunny" Matthius, Jo-Ellen Brannigan (Bernard), and Kate Matthius, and brothers, Robert Matthius (Linda) and Gregg Matthius (Christine). Perhaps his greatest joy in life were his seven nieces and nephews, Matthew, Andrew and Jacquelin Matthius, Jeffrey and Emily Brannigan, and James and Peter Matthius. Their accomplishments were a great source of pride and happiness. There will be visitation at Casey Funeral Home Thursday, June 30, from 7 to 9 p.m., and Friday from 9 to 10 a.m., with a service to celebrate his life at Immanuel Union Church on Friday, July 1, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wagner College Athletics program or The Michael J. Fox Foundation'
