Born on June 9, 1928, in Manhattan to the late Hyman and Rose Moizman, Elaine was raised in Ridgefield, New Jersey. Her father owned a beloved neighborhood candy store, which Elaine visited daily—developing a lifelong fondness for sweets that brought her joy throughout her life.
Elaine attended Wagner College on Staten Island, where fate introduced her to Francis X. Murphy, a student attending on the GI Bill. Despite the social and religious pressures of the time, their love endured. Though Elaine was transferred to NYU by her family in hopes of ending the relationship, their bond prevailed, and they were married in 1950.
Elaine dedicated many years to raising their three children—Michael, Susan, and Timothy—as a stay-at-home mother. In the 1970s, she began a new chapter, working for 25 years at the New York Foundling Hospital, where she helped foster children with compassion and commitment.
In retirement, Elaine embraced an active and joyful lifestyle. She took up bowling, bridge, line dancing, and regularly exercised at the YMCA. She treasured her annual family vacations to Long Beach Island, where she and Frank hosted their children and grandchildren, creating cherished memories that spanned generations.
Elaine is survived by her loving children and grandchildren: Michael Murphy, Nat Baranello, Connor Murphy, Deirdre Cruz, Zach Zelman, Bridget Whitcomb, and Sara Zelman. She found great happiness in her 11 great-grandchildren: Francis Baranello, Gabriel Baranello, Brendan Cruz, Maeve Murphy, Mary Murphy, Viviana Cruz, Ronan Murphy, Charlie Whitcomb, Beau Whitcomb, Henry Schwartz, and Lila Zelman. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Murphy.
Elaine’s warmth, strength, and wit touched all who knew her and all who knew her adored her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and a life well lived.
