I had the privilege of working under Ms. Maley as an ELA teacher. I will always be grateful for her guidance—not only because of how much she taught me professionally, but because of the quiet, steady way she helped shape who I became as an educator and leader. She was a woman of remarkable grace and poise—brilliant, calm, and deliberate in every word she chose. There was a thoughtfulness about her that I’ve rarely encountered since.

One memory in particular has stayed with me all these years. Early in my teaching career, I thought I had everything figured out—maybe even a little too self-assured, one could say. She had asked me to complete something by the end of the week, and I, convinced it wasn’t all that important, simply didn’t. When she followed up, she reminded me—without ever raising her voice—that part of working in this system is understanding that certain responsibilities aren’t up for personal debate. She pointed out, in her signature measured way, how it could easily be seen as insubordination. It was a moment of clarity for me—not just because I realized how wrong I’d been, but because she handled it with such composure. She didn’t need to chastise or punish. She trusted I would course-correct, and I did. That’s who she was—firm, fair, and always guiding you toward better, without diminishing you.

I carry her lessons with me to this day—lessons about responsibility, leadership, and the value of speaking with intention. Ms. Maley’s influence is woven into the educator and person I’ve become. It was an honor to have known her, and an even greater honor to have learned from her. May her memory be eternal.

My deepest sympathies to you Mary, Frederick and all Liz’s loved ones. Mary, my oldest and dearest friend, my heart is with you. I have such fond memories of Liz from childhood. She listened to cool music,  always played the cool albums. I remember hearing Meatloaf the first time as she was singing along with “You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth “ Every time I hear that song, I always think of her and I always will.

Fond memories will be cherished of our childhood family gatherings - Thanksgiving, Christmas and summer BBQs.  Although our family moved to the west coast many decades ago - my sisters and I meet up with Lizzie and Mary 2 years ago and had a beautiful brunch and stroll thru Central Park.  Prayers for Frederick, Mary and all Lizzie’s friends and family.

Liz was a remarkable woman. Kind, compassionate, tenacious, courageous and whip smart. She was a warrior. What she endured these last five years, she did so with quiet dignity and grace.  A feat I think few could accomplish.  She went to her many treatments with homemade baked goods for the staff.  Who does that? Liz. And during this, she was still there to help anyone who needed it.  An “I” problem always became a “we” problem to Liz.  Need a ride, call Liz.  Need to vent, call Liz.  Need help hanging curtains, call Liz. Need an honest, intelligent opinion, call Liz, Need a lively, informed conversation on current events, Liz was your girl. There won’t be another like her, and I will never stop missing her.
