Ellen was born on September 28, 1941, in Staten Island to Arthur and Gladys Rudolph. She graduated from St. John’s Villa Academy and went on to attend business school. In her early career, Ellen worked as an administrator for the insurance brokerage firm Johnson & Higgins. She later took time away from her career to raise her family, a role she cherished deeply. Ellen eventually resumed her career with the New York City Police Department as a school safety officer, retiring in 2003.
Ellen will be remembered for the warmth she brought to every gathering, her positive attitude, strong Catholic faith, and love of family and friends. She had a gift for making people feel welcome and heard, and she truly enjoyed entertaining, especially at her beloved beach bungalow at Cedar Grove Beach Club, where she was a member for more than 60 years. Ellen loved people, conversation, laughter, and celebration — especially St. Patrick’s Day.
Ellen shared a beautiful and enduring marriage with her beloved husband, Thomas W. Loeffel. Theirs was a strong and devoted partnership, one admired by many and held up as an example of lasting love and commitment. She was a proud mother, a devoted grandmother, a loyal friend, and truly one of a kind — a woman who met life with strength, optimism, humor, and grace.
Ellen was predeceased by her loving husband, Thomas W. Loeffel; her parents, Arthur and Gladys Rudolph; her sister, Gladys Wright; and her nephew, Michael J. Rudolph.
She is survived by her sons, Thomas A. Loeffel (Dennis Whalen) and Kevin J. Loeffel (Gina Borgia); her granddaughters, Meghan and Katie; her brother, James A. Rudolph (Pam); and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ellen’s memory to the American Lung Association.
