Beloved father and grandfather, active in his community
Emmanuel Konstantinos Zeakis, (77) of Staten Island, NY, sadly departed us on May 10, 2023.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Catherine Zeakis (nee Johanides) in 2014 and his sister Argyre Papadoyiannis (nee Zeakis) in 2022.
He is survived by his daughter Anna Zeakis-Lyons, son in law, Brian Arthur Lyons and his three beloved grandchildren Arianna, Matthew and Dennis.
Emmanuel was born in the village of Melambes in Crete, Greece on February 25, 1946. Him and his sister were orphaned at a very young age and were fortunate enough to have wonderful extended family there that cared and loved them both. Family that he was forever grateful to. Emmanuel made his way to the United States in the mid 1970's. He joined his sister and brother-in-law, who had relocated a few years before.
Emmanuel met his wife, Catherine, shortly after at Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Staten Island, where they were both active members. They were married on December 10, 1980.
Emmanuel was employed by the state of New York at S.I.D.D.S.O (Willowbrook State School) as an Adaptive Equipment Specialist, until he retired in 2005.
For all who knew Emmanuel, knew of his gentle, caring and helping nature. His friendliness and good heart. Although life did not come easy for him, he always stayed positive and faithful. He cherished all his family and friendships and always showed his gratitude.
Since a young boy, Emmanuel's passion was his Greek Orthodox Faith and served as church cantor for over 30 years at Holy Trinity, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Staten Island and over 10 years at St. Fanourios in Elizabeth, NJ. Emmanuel was also a member of AHEPA and the MINOS CRETAN ASSOCIATION in Astoria, Queens, as well as the KRITIKI FILOXENIA of Staten Island, where he served as treasurer at one point.
Emmanuel loved going to church, taking trips with his family, spending time with his good friends, cooking, gardening, watching movies and frequently speaking and with his family and friends in Greece and Australia.
He truly enjoyed spending time with his 3 grandchildren, daughter and son in law who adored him very much. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him dearly.
His viewing will be Wednesday May 17, 2023, at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Avenue Staten Island, NY. A funeral service will be held in his honor on Thursday May 18, 2023, at Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 12PM. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery.
