Erna M. Hammerton, 88 Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and native Staten Islander, Erna M. Hammerton passed away on Nov. 24, 2019, at Christiana Medical Center, Newark, Del, surrounded by her family. She was born on Staten Island, N.Y., in February 1931 and was the daughter of the late Dennis and Erna Heckler Cregan. Mrs. Hammerton attended Blessed Sacrament School and was a graduate of St. Peter's Girls High School, on Staten Island in 1948. She went on to earn her bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from Hunter College in NYC. While attending Hunter College Erna was president of the Staten Island Club and also a member of the school's mathematics, business and Newman Club. Upon graduating Erna started working as a secretary to the treasurer of the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad Company and later secretary for Walter Kidde Construction in New York. On May 16, 1953 Erna married her sweetheart Robert E. Hammerton. In 1955 their first child arrived and together they raised six children. Erna was very involved with all her children's activities at her alma mater Blessed Sacrament School. She was a member of the Mother's Guild, past president of Catholic Daughters, PTA member and numerous times CLASS MOM. Mrs. Hammerton returned to the work force in 1971 and went to work at Notre Dame High School as a teacher but later became the secretary to the guidance counselor. She retired in 1992 after 21 years. In 1993 Erna and her husband Bob moved to Cambridge, Md. to enjoy retirement. She enjoyed camping and sailing on their sailboat The Mid Life Crisis. While enjoying sailing Erna became a member of the Cambridge Sail and Power Squadron and filled the position of education officer. She was also a member of the Cambridge Yacht Club and a longtime volunteer at the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. In Cambridge she was a parishioner of Saint Mary Refuge of Sinners Parish. Mrs. Hammerton was a member of the Saint Mary's Society and also volunteered for many years as secretary to the director of Religious Education. Mrs. Hammerton belonged to several knitting clubs and she very much enjoyed knitting blankets and sweaters for family members. What Erna truly enjoyed was her time with her beloved husband, Bob, who passed away 4 .5 months ago and her fast growing family. They loved to have family reunions so the family could all get together. Erna helped organize the last reunion in 2018, to celebrate her and Bob's 65th wedding anniversary. A total of 66 family members were able to attend. "Our Mom was all about family and loved every minute of it, she will be greatly missed by all, but we know she is dancing with our Dad" said her daughter, Patty Gangemi. Erna was preceded by her husband of 66 years, Robert and is survived by two daughters, Theresa M. Bruno and husband, Anthony, of Dallas, TX; Patricia A. Gangemi and husband, Joseph, of Staten Island, N.Y.; four sons, Robert A. Hammerton and wife, Anna, of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; Thomas D. Hammerton and wife, Patricia, Campbell Hall, N.Y.; James J. Hammerton and wife, Nanci, of Sussex, N.J., and Steven V. Hammerton and wife, Candice, of Lisbon, Maine; 17 grandchildren, Michael, Stephanie, Melissa, Joseph, Kristine, Andrew, Shawn, Vincent, Christopher, Kenneth, Kaitlynn, Kimberly, Victoria, Juliann, Ryan, Steven, and Alexandra; 18 great-grandchildren and several wonderful nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Erna was preceded in death by her brother, Dennis Cregan and sister, Claire Connelly. Family will receive friends at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Ave., Staten Island, N.Y. on Monday, Dec. 2, 2019, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1091 Forest Ave., Staten Island, N.Y. at 10 a.m. with interment at Resurrection Cemetery, 361 Sharrott Ave., Staten Island, N.Y.
