Ethel Andrews Terkelsen, 89, a spirited, energetic, and native Staten Islander passed away peacefully on Nov 9, 2019.
Born Sept 25, 1930, Ethel grew up in New Brighton. She graduated from St. Peter’s Girls High School and Notre Dame Women’s College (now St. John’s University Staten Island). She earned a Master’s degree from Wagner College. Upon marrying, Ethel and her husband, Stanley Terkelsen, settled in Great Kills. Ethel taught middle school at I.S. 24 for many years before retiring. She maintained her residence in Great Kills until joining the community of Island Shores at Midland Beach, 18 months ago.
An avid tennis player, Ethel played competitively as a member of Westerleigh Tennis Club. Ms. Terkelsen was a world traveler who boldly embraced new countries and cultures with her good friend Mary McGrath. She was inspired by the beach always and visited Long Beach Island and Spring Lake NJ every chance she could. A free spirit-- the first time Ethel owned a car without a convertible top was at age 85.
Ethel Christine adored her three brothers. She is predeceased by Jack Andrews and recently by James Andrews. Surviving is her youngest brother Robert C. Andrews (Bob), a Marist Brother. She is the daughter of Nicholas Andrews, Ethel Madrigal, and stepmother Marguerite. Her surviving relatives, friends and former students forever will remember Ethel’s generosity and exuberance.
There will be a mass for Ethel at her local parish of St. Clare’s on Friday Nov 15th 2019 at 9:45 in the morning. She will be buried alongside her husband, Terk, at Ocean View Cemetery.
