With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Evangelia Sotiriou, age 67, of New York, New York, who departed this life peacefully on Sunday, May 11, 2025. A devoted mother, cherished grandmother, beloved teacher, and faithful servant of her church, Evangelia lived a life marked by grace, compassion, and unwavering love.
Born with a kind heart and a generous spirit, Evangelia dedicated herself to the service of others. She earned a master’s degree in education from Wagner College and touched countless young lives as a teacher at Richmond Hill Children’s Center. But it was her two daughters, Victoria and Stephanie, who were the center of her world, and in recent years, she found immeasurable joy in being “Yiayia” to her granddaughters, Liliana and Alexia.
For more than two decades, Evangelia served as the Director of Sunday School at Holy Trinity–St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church on Staten Island, where her faith and commitment helped shape the spiritual lives of many children in the community. Her devotion to the Church and to God was evident in all she did, and her gentle presence will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
She was the beloved wife of the late Manny Sotiriou, and their love continues through the lives of their children and grandchildren. Evangelia is survived by her daughter Victoria and her husband Stephen Vasilakopoulos, her daughter Stephanie and her husband Nicholas Martin, and her adored granddaughters Liliana and Alexia.
Evangelia’s love of art and painting reflected the beauty she saw in the world around her. She found joy in simple pleasures—quiet moments with her family, laughter with her friends, and the unconditional love of her beloved pets: Angel, Sophie, Tiffany, Chloe, and Sugar.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Avenue, Staten Island, NY.
Her funeral service will take place on Monday, May 19, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1033 W Park Avenue, Ocean Township, NJ, followed by a committal service at 12:15 PM at Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island.
Evangelia’s life was a testament to kindness, strength, and faith. Her memory will forever be a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
