Born on Staten Island in 1927, Evelyn was the fourth daughter and fifth child of Anthony and Rose (Caporale) Fressola. Evelyn cherished precious memories of growing up on Scribner Avenue, which she generously and lovingly shared with her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. These accounts of her lifetime of memories were a treasure, and will be greatly missed.
Evelyn graduated from Curtis High School in 1944 and went on to achieve a Bachelor’s degree and Master of Arts in Education from Hunter College. She was employed by the New York City Department of Education as a teacher in P.S. 34, and as a teacher and administrator in P.S. 13, both on Staten Island, until her retirement in 1986. “Mrs. Mazzitelli” was a dedicated educator, and in 1984 received a Teacher of the Year award in recognition of her outstanding work as a professional in the field of teaching.
She wed the love of her life, Louis, in 1952, and they had two daughters. Evie and Lou were married for 35 years until Louis’ untimely passing in 1987.
Evelyn was an avid reader and loved the theater. Plays on Broadway, at the Paper Mill Playhouse, and at Wagner College were among her great enjoyments after she retired. Following her retirement, Evelyn also was involved in various volunteer activities, including membership in the Women’s Auxiliary at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and its successor RUMC. Evelyn was also a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Staten Island Historical Society at Richmondtown, where she received numerous certificates of merit and recognition for her outstanding community service.
In addition to her husband, Evelyn was predeceased by her siblings Alfonso, Marie, Catherine, and Sally, and by her beloved daughter and best friend, Lois. She is survived by her brother, Michael Fressola, her devoted daughter Eva Lynn Hayko, son-in-law John, grandchildren Emily Rose Forman (Christopher) and Benjamin Louis, both of whom she was so proud and loved with her whole heart, her cherished great-grandson, Henry Christopher, and many loyal and loving nieces and nephews.
Evelyn’s family will forever be grateful for the loving care she received from Vjoleta Note and Quindrella Woods, who “adopted” her as their own mother. The family also extends much gratitude to the staff of Safeharbor Healthcare Services, who were so kind as they assisted with Evelyn’s care during her last years. Finally, we are grateful for the excellent medical care Evelyn received from Dr. Jomarie Zeleznik, whose professionalism and compassion know no bounds.
Contributions may be made in Evelyn’s memory to the National Kidney Foundation or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
