With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Genevieve Ann Grecco (Perna), lovingly known to many as Gene, Genie, Gen, Max, Mom, and Memma. Genevieve passed peacefully on her own terms, leaving behind a legacy of tenacity, devotion, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
Genevieve was born on June 21, 1937, in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, New York, to Michael Perna and Catherine Perna (Auletti), whose roots traced back to Salerno, Italy. She was the oldest of five sisters — Josephine, Frances, Elaine, and Katherine — all of whom survive her. A proud graduate of New Utrecht High School, Genevieve began her career working as a telephone operator for AT&T; before later working as a clerk in the X-Ray Department at Maimonides Medical Center. On August 17, 1957, she married the love of her life, Dr. Louis A. Grecco, at the Basilica of Regina Pacis in Brooklyn — the very place where they first met. Louis preceded her in death in 2017, but together they built a beautiful life centered around family, tradition, and love. In 1982, Genevieve and her family moved to Grymes Hill, Staten Island, where she became well known for her vibrant personality, generosity, and welcoming spirit. She transformed her backyard into a personal oasis and loved opening her home to family and friends. An exceptional cook and natural entertainer, Genevieve created countless cherished gatherings around her table.
She is survived by her children, Gary Grecco and Lisa Grecco; her adored grandchildren Amanda Perez, Alyssa Evensen, Alexa Grecco, Louis Velandres and Zeus Velandres; and her treasured great-grandchildren Cali Perez, Jonathan Evensen Jr., and Anthony Evensen. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews who brought tremendous joy and lasting memories into her life. Genevieve was a true socialite on Staten Island — stylish, outgoing, and full of life. She loved traveling, especially to Italy, where she proudly maintained close family connections and embraced her heritage. She was known as a devoted dog lover, a familiar face at the Staten Island Mall, and someone who deeply valued quality time spent with her sisters and brothers-in-law. Above all else, she was immensely proud of her grandchildren and the family she helped build. Genevieve’s strength, humor, and love will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
