George was born on June 18, 1940, in Staten Island, New York to George and Julia Sharrett. After a brief stay in the Bronx, the family returned to Staten Island. George attended P.S. 22 of Graniteville and Port Richmond High School. As father's do, George's father had the talk with him about his future. What did he want to do with his life. George's first thought was to be involved in music. His father was quick to point out that he could end up a starving artist living in an attic. George's dad's wish was for him to be an engineer. Instead, he became a teacher. He then went on to earn his bachelor's degree in education from Wagner College and his master's degree in education administration from Kean College, NJ. After being a substitute teacher in various school districts in NJ, George dedicated thirty-five and a half years to teaching young minds in the East Orange School District. Following his retirement from East Orange, he taught in the adult education department at the College of Staten Island.
With the encouragement of his mother, George was told to "go to church and meet the nurse who wore a bun in her hair". Claire approached George and they began talking. In January of 1973 they had their first date. George proposed 5 months later, and they were married on December 8, 1973. George was deeply devoted to his love of the Lord and his family. With his love for music, he took that passion and became an organist and choir director in several Staten Island Churches. He also enjoyed giving piano lessons and had the occasional organ student. George also enjoyed his time spending many a nights with the men's bible study.
George is survived by his wife of 52 years, Claire; his sons, David, Stephen (Jennifer), and Christopher (Jillian; and his three grandchildren, Alexander, Sophia and Dorian and his niece, BethAnn Trombetta. He is predeceased by his sister, Julia Kostovich.
