Gertrude Johnsen, age 99, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026, after a long and beautiful life that began on November 26, 1926. Gertrude was a woman whose warmth and steady presence made her family feel loved.
She shared a devoted marriage with her beloved husband, Arnold Johnsen, with whom she built a home filled with love, laughter, and the everyday joys of raising a family. Arnold passed away in 2006, and Gertrude carried his memory with her always.
Gertrude was the proud mother of four children: JoAnn Massaro, married to Thomas; Donna Bilotti, who predeceased her, and Donna’s husband Carmine, also predeceased; Linda; and Steven Christopher, married to Debbie. She was blessed with grandchildren who brought her endless joy — JoAnn’s children Michael, Gregory, and Audra, and Donna’s children Matthew, married to Kristine, and Diana. Her heart grew even fuller with the arrival of her great‑grandchildren: Emily, Liliana, and Luke Massaro, and Mia and Gianna Bilotti, each of whom lit up her life in their own way.
A dedicated homemaker, Gertrude poured love into everything she touched. She found happiness in the simple pleasures that filled her days — bowling with friends, square dancing with Arnold, sunbathing on warm afternoons, playing dice and card games, and sewing and knitting gifts made with care. Her hands were rarely still, and her heart was always open. She also had a deep love for animals and welcomed many pets into her home over the years, each one becoming a cherished part of her family. She treasured her many trips with friends, especially their excursions to the racetrack and to Atlantic City. She cherished her backyard, a place where she hosted countless family gatherings and watched her children, grandchildren, and great‑grandchildren laugh, play, and grow. In her later years, that same backyard became a peaceful sanctuary where she spent quiet hours on her back porch with her daughter Linda, sitting in her favorite chair and watching the wildlife that visited — a simple joy that brought her deep comfort.
Gertrude leaves behind a family who will forever cherish her strength, her kindness, and the traditions she passed down. And while she is deeply missed here, there is comfort in knowing she is reunited in heaven with those she loved so dearly — her husband Arnold, her daughter Donna, and her son‑in‑law Carmine and many other loved ones who have gone before her.
Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured, the memories she created, and the love she gave so freely.
