Gladys Segarra was born on December 20, 1933, in Manhattan. She was the last surviving of eight children born to Esperanza and Joseph Concepcion. They moved from Manhattan to Staten Island and settled in St. George.
She met and married Jose Segarra. They had four children.
Judy (who predeceased her mom), Daniel, Stephen, and Abraham.
Her mother Esperanza was involved with her church, Rehoboth Pentecostal Church in Manhattan, and was a missionary there and on Staten Island, where she helped found and establish the sister church in Port Richmond.
Gladys was a longtime member of Rehoboth, and was a member of the choir, played the piano, and when necessary, the drums.
The church played a vital role in her life. She participated in bible studies, music, drama, and community outreach. Gladys’ faith was strong. She was happiest when singing and worshiping. She was always ready to greet with a strong hug and a great laugh.
Her hobbies included playing the piano, singing, word searches and playing board games, especially Parcheesi (she was a fierce competitor as were her siblings).
Gladys is survived by her three sons, and their spouses/partners, as well as her six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
