STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Native Staten Islander James (Red) Benedict, 67, of Dongan Hills, a loving family man who was happiest when in the company of his grand-nephews, died Sunday after being struck and killed by a car while walking along Capodanno Boulevard in South Beach.
Born and raised in Mariners Harbor, he settled to Dongan Hills around 1999.
Mr. Benedict graduated from New York University with a bachelor's degree. He managed a florist shop on Staten Island for about 15 years, and then managed Staten Island Expressway Collision in Rossville for 10 years.
He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed hunting.
Above all, Mr. Benedict cherished being with his family, and looked forward to attending his grand-nephew's baseball and basketball games.
"He was always willing to help anybody — if you needed to smile all you had to do was look at Uncle Red," said his niece, Maria Benedict.
He is survived by two sisters, Diane Agnello and Anna Pierce.
The funeral will be Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills. Arrangements include cremation.
Arrangements under the direction of Virginia Funeral Chapel, Staten Island, NY.
