Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral from the Casey/McCallum & Rice Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, New York 10308 at 8:30 am Saturday, August 22nd, then to Church of St. Clare, 110 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island for at Funeral Mass offered at 9:45 am. Joanie was born in Brooklyn, NY and lived there for many years before moving to Staten Island. She was a dedicated communicant of Church of St. Clare and a devout Catholic.
Joanie’s first professional employment was as a data entry manager for Quality Data Systems. She then was a Senior Secretary at Bowery Savings Bank and finished her career at SUNY Downstate Medical Center as an Assistant to the Director or Labor Relations. She was at SUNY for over 25 years; had a large breadth of responsibilities and was well respected by her colleagues.
Joanie had many interests. Travel, both domestically and internationally was her main passion. Her other interests were long walks on the boardwalk with friends, yoga and dining out. She had a wonderful wit and sense of humor and was terrific company at any gathering.
Joanie was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Helen Bavaro and well as her brother, Victor and sister in law, Lillian. She is survived by a nephew Richard and by her nieces, Jenene, Mia, and Juliana as well as dozens of adoring cousins. Joanie also had a chosen family in her lifelong friends: Andrea, Lisa, Linda and Jackie.
