Loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, a woman of strong faith, and devotion to family passed away peacefully at Eger Healthcare Facility, S.I. on Tuesday October 15, 2019. Joan was the daughter of the late Robert and Frances Birmingham. Born and raised on Staten Island, she lived most of her life in Westerleigh as an active parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church.
Joan was a graduate of Sacred Heart grammar school,
Port Richmond H.S. and
Grace Institute class of 1940. Joan then worked as a secretary in NYC.
During WWll she volunteered with her sisters as a nurse’s aide.
In 1943 she married her beloved husband Raymond and relocated to Maine where she worked as a secretary for the US military while her husband served in the US army.
Joan was an accomplished artist and took joy in watercolor painting. She was an avid baseball fan and loved watching the Mets. Joan was especially devoted to her family and always saw the silver lining in every cloud. She enjoyed hosting holidays and spending time with family and friends.
She especially loved the company of her adoring grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joan is predeceased by her beloved husband Raymond Sr, cherished children son Raymond Jr, daughter Kathleen, son in laws Jeremiah and Richard, and her dear sisters
Roberta, Ruth, Dorothy and Annette. She is survived by her loving children, son Robert(Patricia)Mulligan, and daughters Marilyn Crisson and Irene(Dennis)Sullivan, 11 grand children and 5 great grandchildren.
