John Joseph Flanagan, 23 Loving son and brother, a 'Man for Others' John Joseph Flanagan, 23, of Grymes Hill, unexpectedly passed away this weekend at Villanova University, where he was a student and a presidential scholar. The loving son of John "Jack" and Wendy Flanagan, and admired brother of Connor Charles Flanagan, he is also survived by his grandparents, Charles and Ruth Skelton, loving aunts and uncles, cousins, and his girlfriend, Mikayla Cairo. John graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel School, Tompkinsville, and Regis High School, Manhattan, where he was an honor student. John, a Jesuit "Man for Others," devoted himself to community service. He was active in the Snug Harbor Little League, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, served as president of Regis' Catalyst charitable service program, and recently served on Villanova's volunteer coordination committee for the Special Olympics. John was a member of Troop 77 of the Boy Scouts of America, and attained its highest rank of Eagle Scout. As a member of Trinity House in Pompano Beach, Fla., John was a guiding light to help others in recovery persevere while successfully pursuing his own recovery from alcoholism. He had just started a recovery support group at Villanova, where he had recently returned to pursue his Honors Biology study, intending to become a doctor. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, and was always willing to sponsor and speak with others in recovery at any time. John touched the lives of everyone he knew and met and will be dearly missed by all. Beside John's passion for helping others, he loved camping, golfing, snowboarding, fishing, and playing cards. In lieu of gifts and flowers, we ask you please make a donation to Regis High School, Villanova University or the Florida House Experience in the name of John Flanagan. We would also like to give our heartfelt thanks for the continued outpouring of support from the community that is helping the family deal with such a tragic loss of life.
