Mr. Garmendi graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn and after joined the U.S. Navy as a Seabee in World War II. He served in the Pacific theater for four years, and later worked as a carpenter and joined the carpenters' union. He was then a longshoreman and a member of the International Longshoremen's Association. He retired in 1993.
He was a member of the Great Kills Friendship Club and a parishioner of St. Claire's R.C. Church.
He loved sports, especially baseball, and was an avid Mets fan, never missing a game. Mr. Garmendi enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed Sunday dinners. According to his son John, "He loved to talk to people, he was very social, and he was a loving family man."
In addition to his son, John, surviving are his daughters, Dina Assante and Joanne Vigilante; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in St. Clare's Church. Burial will be in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.
