John Helfrich Jr., age 89, of Staten Island, New York, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and love. Born on July 29, 1934, he lived a rich and fulfilling life marked by his unwavering commitment to his community and his loved ones.
John was a man of remarkable generosity and compassion, exemplified by his 25 years of volunteer work at Seaview Nursing Home, for which he was honored with the prestigious Obama Award. His selflessness extended beyond this, as he also devoted his time to volunteering at Gloria Vanderbilt Nursing Home, bringing comfort and joy to those in need.
A proud veteran, John served his country with honor in the Navy and the Merchant Marines. He was a cherished member of the Forty and Eight as well as the Keller Watkins American Legion, where his camaraderie and loyalty were greatly valued by his comrades.
In addition to his service, John had a zest for life that was infectious. He found solace and freedom on the open road, indulging his passion for riding his motorcycle. An adventurer at heart, he was also a long-distance swimmer, embracing challenges with determination and courage.
Above all, John cherished his family, particularly his beloved wife of 40 years, Mary Ann. Their bond was a testament to enduring love, mutual respect, and unwavering support.
John will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched with his kindness, his warmth, and his indomitable spirit.
A visitation for John will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Casey-McCallum Rice Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10308. A funeral service will take place on Monday, April 29, 2024, at 11:00 AM at St. Clare's Church, 110 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10308, followed by a committal service at Ocean View Cemetery, Amboy Road, Staten Island, NY 10308 at 12:00 PM.
