Born on March 2, 1949, in Yonkers, New York, John lived a life marked by service to his country, dedication to his community, and love for his family.
A proud veteran of the Vietnam War, John served his country with honor and received the Bronze Star medal. Following his military service, he began a distinguished career in law enforcement. In 1973, he joined the Yorktown Police Department, where he devoted more than three decades to protecting and serving his community. Through his years of dedication and hard work, he rose to the rank of Sergeant, retiring in 2004 after 31 years of service.
John’s dedication to protecting others extended far beyond the call of duty. During his years with the Yorktown Police Department, he was formally commended by the town board and later awarded the title of Policeman of the Year for his role in saving a two-year-old girl's life. Through his quick thinking and calm response, John helped guide the child’s mother through a life-threatening emergency and coordinated the dispatch of emergency responders. It was one of the many ways John demonstrated his commitment to serving and protecting others.
Beyond his military service and career in law enforcement, John was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, and grandfather. While his years of public service were an important part of his life, his greatest legacy is the family he leaves behind.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria Schulz; his five children, Jon Schulz and his wife, Christine, of Congers, New York; Heather Ricci of Florida; Christine Schulz of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Timothy Schulz and his wife, Kate, of Ashburn, Virginia; and Matthew Schulz of Holmes, New York; as well as his stepson, Nick Shelse and his wife, Caitlin, and his stepdaughter, Jessica DeLorenzo.
John was also a loving grandfather to Addyson, Adrianna, Alessia, Allison, Jenna, Kaitlyn, Luke, Patrick, Robert, Seamus, Shane, Sofia, and Sydney.
His memory will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
